This bench came together from two slabs I had kicking around, birch for the main seat and purpleheart for the accent. If you haven’t worked with purpleheart before, it has a bit of a personality. Fresh off the saw it actually goes brown, which is always a little alarming the first time. Give it some time to oxidize and it comes back to that deep purple colour it’s known for. Worth the wait.
The birch has a nice clean grain that pairs well with the purpleheart without competing with it. Keeping the live edges on both pieces means you’re working with the natural shape of the slabs rather than fighting it, so every bench ends up a little different.
This one is sitting in my own house now, but if you’ve got a space that could use something similar, get in touch. Happy to work from your dimensions or your own slabs if you have something in mind.
